Will you hold a Camp VJ in my town?
With your help, yes. We have had many requests to produce Camp VJ in a number of locations: From Edinburgh to Orlando. Visual Editors partners with many leading journalism associations and schools and if you are willing to host a training event in the future - please contact
Robb Montgomery for sponsor details.
What will I learn?
Reporters will learn how to set up their cameras and audio gear to produce professional reports from the field; How to shoot and edit sequences, conduct interviews for film and practice with the editing workflow, story editing and principal technologies.
Working in small groups and using their cameras and editing tools, students will get hands-on experience gathering the elements to put together a news video for the Web.
More about the video equipment
It is impossible to support all the possible camera and video editing software combinations, so students must bring a camera and a laptop with working editing software. Students are responsible for making sure their system (camera and laptop) works before packing it along. Most important: Make sure that your software can import your camera's footage. Groups will need one system for every four students.
CAMERA: A small video camera (Or a point and shoot that can capture video at 30FPS)
EDITING SOFTWARE: Any of these will work: iMovie, Avid, Pinnacle, Vegas, Premier, Final Cut Studio or Windows Movie Maker . . . but Final Cut (Either Express roro Pro version) is the most compatible with the training.
Will this training help journalism faculty?
The answer is, of course, yes. Camp Video Journalism students have included Pulitzer-prize photographers, professors and directors of journalism schools. Every Camp VJ has attracted journalism faculty who come to learn how to tell video stories better.
Can I help teach?
By all means, please submit your interest and CV. The training experience is enhanced with more perspectives and lessons from experienced VJs. The Camp VJ instructor roster includes journalists with world wide print and video journalism training backgrounds. Passion is a plus and the charity encourages volunteerism.
Is there a student rate?
There is for full-time college students and it is even less expensive than the early-bird rate. Remember, Visual Editors doesn't charge for membership or any of the online resources it provides. Off-line training is what keeps the charity operating as an all-volunteer effort.
Want to help more student journalists?
Visual Editors has applied for a grant to pay tuition costs for a few students to attend future camp VJ events. Wish us luck and if you know of any sponsors or grant makers who fund such educational initiatives, please contact the Visual Editors Foundation at www.visualeditors.org.

"I really recommend this training for true beginners. People who haven’t yet picked up a video camera and don’t know what an editing system looks like."
