Contact Robb Montgomery if you have questions about what to bring.
What video editing software should I use?
Final Cut is a the preferred video editor of many Camp VJ students and instructors. It's what instructors use to teach with and there are two versions of Apple's Final Cut and the less expensive $199 Final Cut Express version is ideal for most daily video tasks.
On the PC side, Adobe Premier Pro (Not the 'Elements' version") is a stellar video editing application that students enjoy using. It is very similar to Final Cut.
Windows MovieMaker and iMovie severely limit the editing functions necessary to learn key editing and story concepts. These are not recommended.
What camera should I bring?
By far the easiest camera to use for training is a digital video camera that uses DV tape to record and has a firewire connector, an external mic in jack and or or shotgun microphone attached. Typically this includes models like the include the Canon HV-30, Sony A1U among the many modern choices available.
The takeaway.
It is more important to get a camera with a great microphone than it is to get one that merely takes pictures in Hi-Def or HDV. Students have encountered far fewer technical problems when they bring along a standard DV or HDV tape based model.
Beware: Flip cameras produce very shaky video and video files that have to be converted before they can be edited in software.
