The
Camp Video Journalism workshops I produce for Visual Editors will be serving up new classes and one of the questions that always comes up is what software should I edit with?
A lot of "Video Joes" use Final Cut Studio, Avid, or Adobe Premiere Pro.
Any of these programs allow you to quickly elevate your ability to learn the techniques of video storytelling. We demonstrate and support Final Cut and Final Cut Express but have had students graduate who works with Adobe Premiere Pro.
For the video editing classes we require that you use software that supports multiple video timelines really simplifies editing sequences. (In the picture at the top you see may video editor (Final Cut Studio) with multiple video timelines)
That is why we teach in Final Cut Studio - it is the industry and academic standard worldwide.
You can even use Final Cut Express - the $199 version of Final Cut Studio. It is a huge upgrade from iMovie in terms of editing flexibility and the projects you create in Express will prepare you for almost any pro editing app.
Most importantly, test your system with footage from your camera.
Make sure it works with your gear before you pack to come to the camp.
